Swaraj grew from an Indian indigenous-tractor development project and entered commercial production in 1974. Its roots connect government engineering research with Punjab Tractors and Indian farm mechanization.

History and legacy
The development project and the commercial tractor brand have different start dates. TractorData traces the design to CMERI and its transfer to Punjab Tractors in 1970; Swaraj’s own history identifies 1974 as the brand’s establishment. Both milestones are retained rather than treating them as competing founding dates.
