About Avery
Avery was an Illinois machinery business founded by brothers Robert and Cyrus Avery in the 1870s. It became known for planters, threshers, steam equipment, and large tractors. This company was distinct from B. F. Avery & Sons.

The Avery brothers’ business
TractorData dates the brothers’ founding to 1874; a museum-based historical report places their early partnership in 1872. Avery developed from implements into steam and gasoline power, with the Farm & City appearing in 1909.
Later difficulties and closure
The company struggled through economic downturns and reorganized more than once. TractorData places its final closure around the onset of World War II, rather than documenting a single straightforward sale to another tractor maker. The separate B. F. Avery business should not be used to fill gaps in this company’s history.

Index power values can include estimates derived from belt or PTO power. They are identified on each model card and are not interchangeable with a measured engine rating. Model years and missing values follow the source index.
