About Allis-Chalmers

Founded in 1901, Allis-Chalmers brought Milwaukee’s industrial engineering heritage to the farm. It became famous for its orange tractors as well as heavy machinery. Its agricultural business was sold to KHD in 1985; the original company’s Milwaukee offices closed in January 1999.

How it began

Allis-Chalmers was created in 1901 by combining the Edward P. Allis Company, Fraser & Chalmers, Gates Iron Works, and Dickson Manufacturing. Its roots include Edward P. Allis’s purchase of Milwaukee’s Reliance Iron Works in 1861. Charles Allis, Edward’s son, became the merged company’s first president.

What it was known for

The company built engines, pumps, mills, crushers, and other equipment for heavy industry. It entered tractor manufacturing in 1914 and became a major agricultural machinery producer. Its Persian Orange tractor paint, introduced in 1929, gave the brand a distinctive identity.

Who bought the farm equipment business?

In 1985, Allis-Chalmers sold its farm equipment business to Germany’s Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG (KHD), which operated the business as Deutz-Allis. This was a sale of the agricultural business, rather than the entire Allis-Chalmers company. In June 1990, a management group led by Robert Ratliff bought Deutz-Allis’s North American business from KHD and formed AGCO.

When did the original company close?

Financial difficulties led Allis-Chalmers to sell multiple business lines, and it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1987. The original company’s remaining Milwaukee offices closed in January 1999. Its agricultural legacy continued through successor businesses, so the 1985 farm-equipment sale and the 1999 office closure mark different stages of the story.
